Mammoth Site of Hot Springs, SD 2014 Summer Internships

Application Closing Date: January 31, 2014

The Mammoth Site is a natural trap of late Pleistocene fauna. Over
10,000 vertebrate and invertebrate fossils have been uncovered at the
Mammoth Site from its initial field season in 1974 to present. About
3,500 of these bones belong to Columbian and Wooly mammoths, and more
than 2,000 of these bones are preserved in-situ.

The bones of 28 other vertebrate species found at the site, as well as
specimens of 53 other invertebrate and botanical species, are stored in
our well-equipped preparation laboratory and bone repository.

Position: Seasonal internships are available, starting in either May or
June and ending in August or September (to fit your academic schedule).
These are full-time positions (40 hrs/wk) paying $8.10 per hour, with
free housing. You will be working between 400 and 640 hours over the
course of the summer (10-16 weeks; this will include some weekends). The
Mammoth Site is looking to fill seven to nine of these positions.

Responsibilities: The position will involve conducting interpretive
tours and educational classes for the general public (a combined 20
hours per week), museum conservation techniques in Pleistocene fossil
material in the lab, and field techniques in the bonebed (12 lab and 8
bonebed hours per week).

In addition, there will be opportunities to learn molding and casting,
and bonebed cartography.

Minimum Qualifications**: You must be at least an undergraduate student
in biology, geology, anthropology, museum studies, or a related field.
You should also have some experience working with natural history
collections, knowledge of anatomy, and familiarity with computers,
database programs and digital cameras. You needn’t be an expert in any
of these fields, however. You must also possess a good command of the
English language.

Good organizational skills and attention to details are a plus, as is
the ability to work independently. Interpersonal skills and the ability
to effectively communicate with the public are both very important.

*You must be able to lift 25-35 lbs.* This is paramount to your work
here at the Mammoth Site; the primary educational responsibility of a
Mammoth Site intern is leading Junior & Advanced Paleontologist classes.
These classes involve repetitive lifting of buckets full of sediment.

Preferred Qualifications:
An ability to start work on or prior to May 25, 2014 and continue
working until August 15, 2014.
Experience with public speaking and guide/docent work.
Experience in education program development and delivery.
A working knowledge of Microsoft Office, Microsoft Excel and Microsoft
Access, and ArcGIS software.
One year or more of vertebrate paleontology preparation, invertebrate
preparation and/or museum curatorial experience in Pleistocene
vertebrate paleontology.

Housing: Housing is provided free of cost on Mammoth Site property as
partial compensation to the intern.
The Mammoth Site is located in the town of Hot Springs, SD. Housing is
donated residential housing within town limits. The site is also within
town limits. Hot Springs is a town of approximately 4400 people with
several nearby state and national parks for recreational activities. Two
grocery stores are available within approximately 1.5 miles of the site.
Laundry services are available on site.

Application: Contact Justin Wilkins (see below) to receive a Mammoth
Site application and 2 academic reference forms. Submit these materials
