Heritage Preservation Assists With Sandy Recovery

In November 2012, Heritage Preservation was awarded $15,000 by the New York Community Trust<http://heritagepreservation.us1.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=00cbcc194404641e545c4b972&id=2adc5ac2d6&e=5732b353ec> to assist Superstorm Sandy recovery efforts in coordination with Alliance for Response New York City. Funds are being used to purchase supplies for the Cultural Recovery Center<http://heritagepreservation.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=00cbcc194404641e545c4b972&id=a27ec3c84e&e=5732b353ec> in Brooklyn, a temporary salvage space launched by the Foundation of the American Institute for Conservation in cooperation with a consortium of organizations that includes Heritage Preservation. Conservators and collections care professionals are volunteering their time to help artists, galleries, collectors, and cultural institutions stabilize artwork damaged by Hurricane Sandy.

While the deadline for the 2013 Conservation Assessment Program has closed, institutions that were affected by Superstorm Sandy may still be eligible for funding. Heritage Preservation, with approval from IMLS, is able to offer these one time disaster assessments. The Heritage Emergency National Task Force<http://heritagepreservation.us1.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=00cbcc194404641e545c4b972&id=6cb210f277&e=5732b353ec> and FEMA co-sponsored a forum on federal disaster aid for the New Jersey cultural community in December 2012. The forum provided information that cultural heritage stewards needed to know about applying for federal disaster aid in the wake of Superstorm Sandy—and after any presidentially declared disaster. Foundation and emergency grants available to artists and cultural organizations were also explored briefly. The program<http://heritagepreservation.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=00cbcc194404641e545c4b972&id=ac7c665f5f&e=5732b353ec> was presented in cooperation with a number of New Jersey state partners. Over 150 New Jersey cultural institutions suffered damage from Superstorm Sandy.

In April 2012, Heritage Preservation, in partnership with the National Center for Preservation Technology and Training<http://heritagepreservation.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=00cbcc194404641e545c4b972&id=fa95f9ce61&e=5732b353ec>, released its Emergency Response and Salvage Wheel as a free app for Apple devices running iOS 5.1 or later. Since its release, ERS has been downloaded from the App Store<http://heritagepreservation.us1.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=00cbcc194404641e545c4b972&id=ff2ef2843b&e=5732b353ec> more than 1,700 times. Alliance for Response NYC
On January 11, 2013, Alliance for Response New York City<http://heritagepreservation.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=00cbcc194404641e545c4b972&id=970c1670be&e=5732b353ec> (AFR NYC) hosted a program called “Community-Based Recovery after Superstorm Sandy.” Speakers from Eyebeam Art and Technology Center, The Noguchi Museum, and the Martha Graham Center of Contemporary Dance described their experiences preparing for and responding to Sandy, as well as their long roads to recovery. Their presentations helped drive home the enormity of the damage and the importance of collaboration within the cultural community. Following the presentations, the AFR NYC Steering Committee facilitated small-group discussions focused on assessing needs and developing strategies to better prepare New York City to deal with future emergencies.
