[Nhcoll-l] Specimen drawer liners

Hi Paul,

We use the same drawers here at the University of Montana for our vertebrate collections. We put small to medium sized birds in archival paperboard trays, lined with ethafoam, that fit neatly in the drawers. The trays are also helpful because they help minimize specimens rolling around when drawers are opened and closed. For birds that are too large for the trays, we simply line the drawers with the ethafoam sheets. One problem with these type of drawers is that we had the aluminum sides rubbing directly on the metal runners of the cabinet, and causing accumulations of aluminum dust in the drawers! I had to cover all the edges of the drawers with plastic strips, which has helped greatly.

Subject: [Nhcoll-l] FW: Specimen drawer liners

Dear All

Here in the AMNH bird collection, all of our specimen drawers are made with a Masonite base and aluminum sides. We use a thick blotter paper liner which came with the cabinets in the 1930s, but which we have finally run out of. The internal drawer size is 41 x 25 inches. Does anyone have a supplier for such archival, acid-free, un-buffered, blotter paper in these dimensions? Or have any alternative suggestions? We don't want to cut this ourselves! Price is also a concern, we will probably want to buy several 1000 sheets.

Thanks, Paul
