To all, we are starting theprocess of renovating the fossil halls here at the Peabody Museum of Natural History.  Currently I am listing one position, but over the next year we will be hiring 3-4 preparators for the term of the project – 2-3 years.  Ignore the part of the job description called Principal Responsibilities, that’s the HR description for this job title and it does not apply at all to this job.

Fossil Halls Project Museum Preparator

Job Summary - Restores, maintains, and prepares objects in museum collections for storage, research, or exhibit.

Position Focus:
Reporting to the Supervisor of the Vertebrate Paleontology Fossil Preparation Lab, assists in preparation, conservation, and replication of fossil vertebrates for the Fossil Halls project. Under guidance of Lab Supervisor, prepares, cleans, stabilizes andrepairs specimens using proper vertebrate paleontological preparation and conservation techniques. Selects the most appropriate tools and techniques to safely reveal scientific information and safeguard the long-term wellbeing of the specimen. Reconstructs specimen where needed to maintain integrity of specimen, using conservationally sound materials and techniques. Documents preparation histories for individual specimens and enters information into computerized database. Under the guidance of the Lab Supervisor, makes research-quality molds and casts of fossils. Understands and uses Material Safety Data Sheets and selects appropriate personal protective equipment and environmental controls. Assists in transportation of large specimens throughout the department, which may require driving. Supervises and trains volunteers in the fossil preparation laboratory.

Other comparable duties as may be required

Required Education and Experience:
Six years of related work experience, four of them in the same job family at the next lower level, and a high school education; or four years of related work experience and an Associate’s degree; or little or no work experience and a Bachelor's degree in a related field; or an equivalent combination of experience and education.

Required Skill/Ability 1:
Proven ability to operate preparation tools, such as: microscopes, air-scribes, micro-scribes, hand tools, air abrasives, Dremel/Foredom tools.

Required Skill/Ability 2:
Demonstrated knowledge of the basic anatomy of the vertebrate skeleton, including ability to anticipate detailed morphological features hidden by matrix

Required Skill/Ability 3:
Proven ability to use digital cameras, prepare digital preparation records using a PC or Mac, and transcribe technical information into a computerized database with a minimum of errors.

Required Skill/Ability 4:
Demonstrated awareness of adhesives and consolidants and their uses. Ability to paint exhibit-qualitycasts of fossil specimens.

Required Skill/Ability 5:
Demonstrated ability to draw and sculpt accurate reconstructions. Ability to research literature and comparative material to accurately recreate missing portions of fossil specimens.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:
Bachelor’s degree in relevant subject and at least one year’s experience of comparable work or equivalent combination of education and experience.• Required: experience in, and understanding of, the methods used to safely prepare, stabilize, and exhibit fossil materials. Must be able to adapt techniques and knowledge to unique situations involving fossil specimens.
