Majken,

There are many mineral collections (including ours) with the same 
questions and concerns. Fortunately, there are several, freely 
available, National Park Service Conservo-grams address these 
issues--particularly Radioactive Minerals; Health and Safety Issues with 
Geological Specimens; and  Health and Safety Risks of Asbestos. The 
lists of references in each of these publications are helpful as well.

For additional information on health and safety concerns common to 
geological collections download the SPNHC Leaflet #2, Parts

These publications are good places to start. Your institution may have 
health and safety regulations in place that you will need to be aware of 
as well.
