[Nhcoll-l] [HERBARIA] polypropylene annotation labels?

Hi all,
One thing to keep in mind is that internally cross-linked polyester film (polyester terephthalate, made to the specification from the Library of Congress http://www.loc.gov/preservation/resources/specifications/index.html, the equivalent of what used to be sold as Mylar D) is one of the most stable substances known. It has a very high melting point (higher than that at which collections are damaged by heat) and does not react to most chemicals or breakdown readily from UV. It is vastly more stable than any high- or low-density polyethylene or less rigorously manufactured PETs.

Hi Dorothy, (Patrick),
always bickering with Andy here (Hi Andy ;-)
- again, know your settings: this method works well for fluid collections which e.g. use undenatured alcohol or were the denaturing agent is not reactive against plastics. I would definitely refrain to use this labelling method in our fish collection as we have to use MEK denatured alcohol. MEK is a highly aggressive and reactive ketone, which is very well known to cracks down polymer-chains.
European collections should be very careful here, especially in the light of the new EU-directive EU No. 162/2013 which prescribes even higher amounts of MEK for denaturing and prescribes usage of MEK in those countries which used different denaturing agents prior to 2013 (e.g. IMS / camphor).
All the best
Dirk

Wet collections have been using this system for some time now for alcohol labels with very good results. We are printing on to a spun bound polyester using a thermal transfer printer and wax/resin ribbon. This is obviously not a sticky backed label kind of media but I am sure a similar kind of thing could be sourced. Attached is some information on the system and printer that we use as well as a price list from Alpha Systems, the company through we which we buy our supplies.
Happy to provide further information or label samples if needed
Andy

Hi folks,
We are looking for a print-on-demand (printing one label at a time)
method of annotating herbarium sheets. Can anyone share their
experience with thermal transfer label printers (_not_ direct thermal)
using wax resin ribbons and polypropylene labels? I am particularly
interested in the community's opinion on the likelihood that such
labels will be readable for the long term and will not break down.
We are considering the purchase of a Zebra GC420t printer, wax/resin
ribbons and polypropylene labels.
Thanks!
