SPNHC 2014 Conference News
Dear all,
Some updates on the SPNHC conference;
Firstly many thanks for your support - we have almost 250 registrations from close to 100 different institutions, and a remarkable number of abstracts submitted to the conference. Apologies if you have submitted an abstract and you haven't heard from us yet but we have been extremely busy trying to piece everything together. The good news, barring any errors, is we appear to have fitted all the submissions into the conference into what will be a packed and exciting schedule of presentations and posters. We hope to release the detailed program within the next day or two, including details of our inaugural session speakers which will include scientist and presenter Prof Alice Roberts.
Other news,
New workshop! Analytical equipment specialists Bruker UK Ltd are looking to host a one day and two half day workshops as part of the SPNHC 2014 (http://www.museumwales.ac.uk/spnhc2014) conference. The sessions will include demonstrations of equipment and advising on analytical techniques such as X-Ray fluorescence, (XRF): X-Ray diffraction (XRD); and FTIR / Raman. The workshops will offer an introduction into basic concepts of the techniques, museum applications, practical demonstration and an opportunity to sample and analyse your own material.
There will be three opportunities to participate in the workshop;
* Sunday 22nd June, all day at National Museum Wales (10:00 to 16:00). There is no charge and lunch will be provided by Bruker UK.
* Tuesday 24th June, afternoon at National Museum Wales (14:00 to 17:00)
* Thursday 26th June, morning at the Welsh Millennium Centre. (09:00 to 12:00)
If you'd like to attend one of the above sessions then please email Jen Gallichan who is co-ordinating conference registration - Jennifer.Gallichan at museumwales.ac.uk
Open Committee Meetings. From Chris Norris;
Many of you may be planning on attending the 2014 SPNHC conference, hosted by Amgueddfa Cymru - National Museum Wales in partnership with the Natural Sciences Collections Association (NatSCA). You can find details about the meeting, including registration, at http://www.museumwales.ac.uk/spnhc2014/
This year features a change to the long-established pattern for SPNHC conferences. Committee meetings, which previously took place before the formal opening of the meeting, will now be held on the afternoon following the inaugural session of the conference, on Tuesday June 24th.
This is no accident. One of the major challenges we face as a Society is getting our membership engaged in the running of SPNHC. The Society's committees are the bedrock of SPNHC, but much of their work goes unseen. We would like to change this.
Committee meetings have always been open to the SPNHC membership, but this year I want to issue a special invitation to members to attend the meetings on the afternoon of the 24th June. The meeting schedule and agendas for the meetings will be published within next few days on the conference website. Come along, participate, ask questions, and - if what you see interests you - consider joining the committee. We are always seeking talented and energetic people to help run the Society and service is a great route for professional development.
We look forward to seeing you in Cardiff!
Conference Banquet. Apologies, the evening banquet is now FULL and we are at peak capacity. If you wish to add your name to a wait list for attending, please email Jen Gallichan ( jennifer.gallichan at museumwales.ac.uk<mailto:jennifer.gallichan at museumwales.ac.uk>) who will notify you in case of any cancellations. We are currently looking to see if we are able to squeeze more people in after the food has finished for the dancing and drinking part of the evening!
Looking forward to seeing you all in Cardiff next month,
Dymuniadau gorau / Best wishes
