DESCRIPTION:
This is a supervisory position within the Information Science and Management (IS&M) section of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI).
The successful candidate will serve as the leader of the Specimen Collections Department within the Research Information Services subsection of IS&M. Duties include: supervising the operations of the collections of Ichthyoplankton, Fish and Invertebrates, and ensuring their orderly arrangement to phylogeny. Supervises and may participate in data entry; error checking and corrections; data manipulation and storage; and report writing. Supervises the process for electronic data storage and retrieval of other pertinent Collections records. Recommends and implements policies for the maintenance of specimens and data records associated with the Collections. May conduct searches of records and prepares replies to outside inquires about Collections data or holdings.
Duties also include preparation of manuscripts for publications, preparation of internal reports, and cooperation with outside investigators and agencies. Identifies opportunities for enhancing the operations and effectiveness of the Collections and recommends and implements enhancement measures. Such measures include seeking out and coordinating research programs, funding, contracts, or projects that enhance communication of specimens' information among researchers and managers throughout the state and improves Collection holdings consistent with the existing Florida Museum of Natural History/FWC Memorandum of Understanding.
Directs preparation of specimens and records for storage; schedules work on routine Collections maintenance; oversees preparation of loans and associated records; schedules purchases of recurring supplies; directs special projects that enhance the Collections; and assigns general housekeeping chores performed by staff.
Maintains a professional working environment that promotes teamwork within working units and with other sections in FWRI. Coordinate with other sections of FWRI as it relates to grant funding, outreach and specimen identification.
Reviews internal and outside manuscripts and funding proposals as requested. Provides other information as requested by management, outside agencies and the public. Promotes and participates in public outreach efforts. Performs related work as required.
Develops and monitors annual working budget, ensuring that expenditures do not exceed spending authority. Oversees the purchase of curatorial equipment needed to maintain the Collections.
Develops, coordinates and implements outreach and information programs that present scientific information in suitable formats, such as visual displays, interactive exhibits, videos, brochures and outreach campaigns statewide. Venues for this information include, but are not limited to, the FWC Web pages, social media sites, magazines, professional conferences, classrooms and stakeholder meetings. Must be able to work in a deadline-driven environment.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of: the ecology and systematics of Florida's marine animals and of the techniques used in studying those marine species; personal computers and various programs used for word processing, data storage and retrieval, data analysis, principles of statistical design and analysis, and creation of graphs and graphics. Skill in: using equipment customary for field laboratory research on, and curation of marine specimens, interpersonal communication, leadership, budgeting and writing. Ability to: perform independent research and develop collections-related projects; write technical reports and manuscripts, and communicate effectively; to supervise people and establish and maintain effective working relationships; network with scientists and encourage the use of the Collections; formulate policies and procedures relating to the Collections; learn and apply procedures relating to safety, hazardous waste material, and collection maintenance; collect data and utilize problem solving techniques.
The successful candidate will supervise assigned staff. Duties include but are not limited to: recruiting, training, planning and directing work, reviewing employee performance and ensuring compliance with FWRI rules, policies and procedures. Responsible for developing and managing annual working budgets and ensuring that expenditures do not exceed spending authority.
QUALIFICATIONS:
A minimum of a master's degree from an accredited college or university with experience in Invertebrate Systematic (other disciplines will be considered) and museum operations is required; a PhD (or equivalent work experience) is preferred. Must be able to demonstrate strong writing, editing and speaking skills. Excellent interpersonal, team-working skills and the ability to work in a rapidly changing environment under deadlines are also required.
