Hi Dan

Any light is damaging if the exposure is long enough. Visible light is what causes fading.

Some LEDs are at least free of any measureable UV radiation. The UV is what does structural damage to the hair.

You have to test the LEDs for UV output. The Cree lamps we have been using at NMNH have no detectable UV, using a calibrated Elsec 765 meter.

I am copying our lighting specialist, Virginia Croskey in case you’d like additional information.

Greetings all,

We are installing a new TX wildlife hall, and the gaffers swear the new LED lights have NO damage to the specimens. But they also asked if I want UV filters on the lights!

Are LED lights damaging to animal mounts?

Thanks,
Dan
