[Nhcoll-l] Need help identifying contacts

A good place to start for low hanging fruit would be GRBIO (www.grbio.org), the list of biological repositories that is ever growing. Just doing a cursory search on various countries a large number of institutions were listed – some with contact information and some with only a web address from which contact information may be gleaned. It might be useful to try and get these folks engaged in actively registering their institutions. There is a GRBio meeting at the end of April to discuss ways in which this list can be improved for exactly this kind of application.

I have had numerous interactions with collections in some of these countries and as such will send out some feelers. I would encourage anyone else in a similar position to do likewise. It might be nice to have a letter or document that could accompany an email that gets sent officially outlining why this is important but also how they would go about registering their institution.

Please reply to me, not to the entire list.

As part of an effort to make the international shipment of specimens and samples of CITES species for scientific research, the Ornithological Council** has
now completed a letter that we hope will encourage the registration of more scientific institutions around the world. Shipments between registered scientific
institutions (of accessioned material, not material coming directly from the field) can move without permits. The document used in this case is a Certificate
of Scientific Exchange, which does not need to be validated. Validation has become an enormous challenge and has resulted in the loss of many shipments.
Therefore, it is very important to have at least one registered institution in every country.

The letter is being translated into all official CITES languages and a half dozen other languages. Also being translated is the
2012 CITES notification to the parties<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__cites.org_sites_default_files_eng_notif_2012_E024.pdf&d=AwMCaQ&c=-dg2m7zWuuDZ0MUcV7Sdqw&r=CLFZJ3fvGSmDp7xK1dNZfh6uGV_h-8NVlo3fXNoRNzI&m=KYF55asVNTvsxbxgSu_nnUuD8nrW757SnQOeFdIADHM&s=RQyNxc0XL6c8gLZJf28sK3rEGiYBfLICDDaTs4FyY60&e=>, encouraging them to register their scientific societies.

It is impossible to know why some countries have not registered any institutions. Some, no doubt, are concerned about the genetic resources but now that
Nagoya is in effect, that concern should be assuaged (though even without Nagoya, a materials transfer/benefits sharing agreement should have sufficed).
Other countries no doubt have more important things to worry about.

I've compiled a list of countries that have no registered institutions and have tried to prioritize among them but ultimately
we would want to see one institution or more registered in each country. Please let me know if you have worked with any
natural history museums in any of these countries.

It would be extremely helpful to have specific contacts at each institution. If you know a curator or administrator at any
of these institutions, please let me know and if possible, please give me an e-mail address and postal address.

If you can identify a scientific society (with contact info) in your discipline, please provide that information.
