Scientific Assistant in Invertebrate Zoology, American Museum of Natural History
The American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) houses one of the world's largest collections of biodiversity, including over 32 million biological specimens and 4 million fossils. The Division of Invertebrate Zoology is conducting a search for a Scientific Assistant to assist in the growth, use, and management of major portions of the insect collections (Lepidoptera, Diptera, Isoptera: comprised of pinned and alcohol-preserved specimens) and a very comprehensive collection of amber fossils, a total of some 6 million specimens.
Duties: The successful applicant will assist the Curator-in-charge with management of the collections including: specimen sorting, labeling, preparation, accessioning and databasing of loans and visitors; submitting USFWS forms; systematic arrangement, storage and organization of the collections; conservation (ethanol levels, rehousing into better containers, etc.); assisting visitors, responding to requests for collection information; retrieving, packing and shipping loans to other institutions; occasional collection tours; training and supervision of students, volunteers, and part-time assistants.
Qualifications: BS in Biology or related field of natural sciences. Candidates with a general knowledge of terrestrial arthropods are preferred; organizational skill, attention to details, experience with large natural history collections, command of MS Word and Excel, and good interpersonal skills are required; databasing and photomicrography experience desirable.
