Hello Jessica,
I’m writing to you at the suggestion of Rod Pellegrini, the Registrar for the Bureau of Natural History here at the New Jersey State Museum. Could we ask you to post this on NHCOLL-L? If you have any questions, please feel free to be in touch.
Thanks in advance,
Jenny
Please excuse any cross-postings.
Notice of Employment Opportunity
The New Jersey State Museum, located in Trenton, New Jersey, seeks four part-time collections technicians for a one-year, grant-funded project to review and correct collections records in the Museum’s collections management database (EMu, KE Software).
Under the supervision of the Registrar for each of the Museum’s four collecting bureaus, each technician will work with its accession files and objects to analyze and repair existing electronic records, assist in establishing a standardized protocol for data entry, and provide recommendations for populating the database with the current backlog of collection records as part of a phased database revitalization project.
Successful applicants will have one (1) year of experience, including data entry and record-building, with a relational database (EMu or TMS), as well as a Master’s degree from or current enrollment in an accredited college or university graduate program in Museum Studies or a related discipline. Additional experience with one of the disciplines associated with each collecting bureau is preferred but not required:
Bureau of Archaeology and Ethnography: anthropology or New Jersey archaeology
Bureau of Cultural History: history or material culture
Bureau of Fine Art: art history or visual arts
Bureau of Natural History: geology, paleontology, or zoology
The successful candidate will also demonstrate the following knowledge/abilities:
* Knowledge of the resources used in a museum serving individuals of varying interests
* Knowledge of the proper methods of handling scientific, historic and cultural artifacts
* Knowledge of the scholarly methods used to identify, catalog and inventory museum artifacts
* Ability to prepare accurate and complete catalog files
* Persons with mental or physical disabilities are eligible as long as they can perform essential functions of the job after reasonable accommodation is made to their known limitations. If the accommodation cannot be made because it would cause the employer undue hardship, such persons may not be eligible.
Interested applicants should send a cover letter and resume to Jenny Martin-Wicoff, Registrar for the Bureau of Fine Art, electronically atjenny.martin at sos.nj.gov<mailto:jenny.martin at sos.nj.gov> by Thursday, December 10. If an applicant is interested in a particular Bureau, it should be noted in the cover letter.
