I'd be interested in following this conversation (if it goes offline)!

Thanks so much,
Deborah

Hi Cortney,
Just as there is variability in the colors of kunzites there is variability in their light-fading sensitivity. Those two variabilities arise for similar reasons - differences in energy gaps between various electron 'traps' (see Nassau 1992 In: F. Howie (ed.) Care and Conservation of Geological Material: Minerals, Meteorites and Lunar Finds. Butterworth Heinemann, London, 1992).

Knowing the locality and collection date could lead to less uncertainty in predicting light fading rate for your specimen - if you can draw on specific experience from another collection - but it will not lead to certainty.

So what can we say?

* It would be prudent to ensure there is no UV (even though it is not certain that this would reduce fading it is the sensible precautionary thing to do).

* Have the specimen illuminated by visitors activating the specimen light only while viewing. This is probably the most effective and cost-effective conservation measure.

* It would be sensible to not have higher light levels than necessary for viewers to appreciate the specimen.

* Monitor the color of the specimen carefully and reduce exposure before a 'just noticeable fade' is realized. Measuring the color of a transparent stone is far from easy and depends on what equipment you have available. We could discuss off line.
Best,
Rob

Subject: [Nhcoll-l] Kunzite Display

Hello all,

I've had a request to loan a piece of early, very bright pink kunzite for a museum exhibition. Our chief gemologist has been unable to find any concrete information for how quickly kunzite fades and under what light and temperature conditions. Would anyone be able to share guidelines for displaying kunzite to prevent fading?

Thank you!
Best,
Cortney
