New Suitors for Old Collections

Imagine the life history of any specimen collected for scientific research. We find them in nature, isolate, preserve, catalog and study them, and a few of them reach star status as figures or data points in the literature. Too often it's downhill from there, shelved and ignored; never to be digitized, databased, scanned and posted on the Web; never to be taken out for re-analysis or borrowed for use in a new study. They'll never realize their full potential because they've become invisible.
The Global Registry of Scientific Collections<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__www.grscicoll.org_&d=AwIFAw&c=-dg2m7zWuuDZ0MUcV7Sdqw&r=CLFZJ3fvGSmDp7xK1dNZfh6uGV_h-8NVlo3fXNoRNzI&m=lmLQbMxRT7RDrDTABFsQsSy0mDCCZH2-SAYOxIpxVQc&s=f402cmzeI51dKG21TVoXD4pc0dAvnLqsLQreHHFN1Gw&e= > (GRSciColl, grscicoll.org) provides your collections with an easy way to become more visible through an online portal that is increasingly the 'go-to' resource for information about collections. GRSciColl is an online database of information about collections and the institutions that own and operate them. It covers all research disciplines, including anthropology, archaeology, biology, biomedical and veterinary sciences, earth and space sciences, and applied fields such as agriculture, environmental monitoring, the history of science, and technology. It's meant to complement searchable online databases of specimen/sample-level information and is a great first step for collections that haven't been otherwise digitized. Registering online takes only a few minutes and allows you to:

·         Be represented among the world's collections in your discipline;

·         Have a stable URL that represents a collection in publications that refer to your specimens or samples;

·         Guide users from abandoned names and codes previously used by your institution to its current name and code;

·         Post contact information about the people working in your collections;

· Provide potential users with your policies on access and use of your collections,

· Be included in surveys and studies of collections in your discipline; and

· Show up in searches by administrators and funders interested in your collections.
Perhaps most important of all, GRSciColl will enable researchers to find your collection when looking for study material, even if the contents of your collections haven't been digitized. This can increase inquiries, loan requests, visitors, and publications that cite your collections.
GRSciColl provides basic information about location, points of contact, and searchable characteristics of your institution and its collections. The database is also an authoritative source of the codes used to identify your collection and institution in publications. Registering your codes in GRSciColl ensures that your codes are unique and linked to information that will lead users back to your collections. Pensoft Publishers is the first to use GRSciColl as the authority file for linking specimens cited in articles to the collection and institution in which they are found (see a recent example in the journal ZooKeys<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__zookeys.pensoft.net_articles.php-3Fid-3D6872-26display-5Ftype-3Dlist-26element-5Ftype-3D15&d=AwIFAw&c=-dg2m7zWuuDZ0MUcV7Sdqw&r=CLFZJ3fvGSmDp7xK1dNZfh6uGV_h-8NVlo3fXNoRNzI&m=lmLQbMxRT7RDrDTABFsQsSy0mDCCZH2-SAYOxIpxVQc&s=UojDYhqkUy96zxRaF1unj71RVF-2sD_qEmoOUvOMsX0&e= >).
GRSciColl is operated by Scientific Collections International<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__scicoll.org_&d=AwIFAw&c=-dg2m7zWuuDZ0MUcV7Sdqw&r=CLFZJ3fvGSmDp7xK1dNZfh6uGV_h-8NVlo3fXNoRNzI&m=lmLQbMxRT7RDrDTABFsQsSy0mDCCZH2-SAYOxIpxVQc&s=y0nekQXAafRgLlv0ulWRxt9JZSFC9bgXWx_CsmuVg4I&e= >. Food Security Symposium, 18-20 May 2016, Beltsville, MD (see attached)

We are excited to announce the dates and keynote speakers for "Stressors and Drivers of Food Security: Evidence from Scientific Collections". The symposium prospectus and preliminary agenda are attached. This will be the first-ever symposium that brings together food security researchers and experts on scientific collections in diverse research disciplines. The symposium will be an ambitious look forward into food security research that relies on evidence drawn from science across a broad range of disciplines. Participation will be limited to 100 and attendees will be selected to ensure a productive mixture of:

  * Researchers using diverse approaches to basic and applied research on food security and insecurity; and

· Representatives of scientific collections in anthropology, archaeology, biomedicine, biodiversity, ecology, ethnobiology, geology, paleontology, parasitology, veterinary sciences, and others.
The US Department of Agriculture will host the symposium at the National Agriculture Library in Beltsville, Maryland, just outside Washington, DC, on Wednesday to Friday, 18-20 May 2016. The symposium is being organized by Scientific Collections International (SciColl; www.scicoll.org), an initiative devoted to increasing the use and impact of scientific collections for interdisciplinary research.

Three outstanding keynote speakers will set the stage for two days of highly interactive panel discussions, breakout groups, and the integration of ideas between researchers and collections professionals. Our keynote speakers will be:

  *   Dr. Ann Bartuska, Deputy Under Secretary for Research, Education & Economics, US Department of Agriculture, an ecosystems ecologist and USDA representative to the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES);
  * Dr. Vera Lucia Imperatriz-Fonseca, a pollination biologist at the University of Sao Paolo, Brazil, and Co-Chair of the IPBES Experts for thematic assessment of pollinators, pollination and food production; and
  * Dr. Gary Nabhan, an ethnobiologist, agroecologist, conservation biologist, cultural geographer, and W.K. Kellogg Chair in Southwest Borderlands Food and Water Security at the University of Arizona.
The workshop's focus on collections as resources for interdisciplinary research will enable the workshop's participants to take a fresh look at food security research and ask:

  * What kinds of data would we really like to have about the drivers of food security and the stressors that increase food insecurity?
  * What evidence can we find about these drivers and stressors in different environments and regions, and even going back in time?
  * What can the booms and busts of food security through history teach us about the causes of food insecurity? What can it teach us about potential food sources that can withstand the stressors that threaten food security?
