I am considering this as well.  I plan to use barcodes and to number jars based upon size.  I have recently implemented standard jar sizes, so I hope to have a sequence of gallon, half gallon, quart, etc.  I am looking at numbering them like so:



UTEP:Gal:1 (through UTEP:Gal:XXXX)

UTEP:.5Gal:1

UTEP:Qt:1



These would run across my collections.  I can use the barcodes in my collection management system (Arctos) as containers and individual specimens or lots will be assigned to the numbered container they are in.  I would just use one number sequence, but I feel that knowing how many jars of each size I have in the collection would be very helpful.



I haven't completely settled on this, it is just what I am currently thinking...
