[Nhcoll-l] guidelines for printing labels

Dear Heidi,

As Dirk pointed out, there are many aspects of this, both concerning printers, papers, and fluid. A quick and dirty way is to test if the labels get better just through ironing them (as hot as possible) before you put them in the jars. Test a few during a couple of month with a fat animal (borrow an Anguilla from the vertebrate people!) and then try to remove the text with your fingers.

Good luck!

Subject: Re: [Nhcoll-l] guidelines for printing labels

Dear Heidi,

first thing I would explore is if there is any denaturing agent added to your alcohol; some additives are corroding plastics in the long run (especially Ketones). In this case, I would be careful with printing systems that use plastic fibre-sheets and laminate a thin foil that holds the letters on top. Even if you don't have any additives today, it would be worth to figure out if additives were used in the past (which may result in some sort of chemical cocktail inside your jars).

The second question for me would be if you are changing your paper as well; "printing labels" is always a combination of printer and printing medium. So if you are using a specific type of paper for your labels (and want continue to use it), any recommendation should match to the paper you are using.

Even though laser printers do usually use very stable pigments, you can see similar effects of de-lamination. This is the basic difference to ink printing, where the ink penetrates into the paper and thus can be detached that easy from the surface. If you do want to continue with laser printing, the paper should be sufficiently rough to give stable printing results (i.e. pigments are backed around rough the fibres; on smooth paper surfaces, they tend to peel off more easily).

If you are looking for ink printers, you should look into ink printers that offer document proof printing (and respective ink cartridges). Recommendations for ink printing (as far as I know) refer to printers which already turned in modern (digital) fossils and are either no longer available (perhaps via Ebay), or which are about to loose support (e.g. HP stopped the cartridge production of their famous HP 500 & 600 monochrome series).

Because the life time of printers in general is short, I would try to get information from libraries on stable printing systems and critically check (perhaps you could get some test prints) if these would work in your collection. As we are about to loose support for our old HP 600 printers, I asked colleagues if they could send me some labels I could test under our conditions.

During SPNHC in Berlin, Bill Moser and colleagues from the Smithsonian had a nice presentation on a promising printing system; you can find details on page 67 in the abstract volume

Hope this helps, even though it surly is not a straight forward answer to your question ...
Dirk

Hello,

Can someone please direct me to a resource/guidelines for the best settings for printing labels that will be immersed in alcohol (and occasionally formalin)?

We have been printing using a laser printer (Lexmar MS310dn) on permafiber paper. We have been using this system for years but I have recently noticed that, particularly on small (vial sized) labels, that abrasion is wearing/scratching off some of the ink (mainly from forcept or vial mouth). The label ink doesn't bleed once immersed but I am still concerned with the long term viability of these labels.

Many thanks,
