We have been using black inkjet labels on resistall-treated rag paper for years without any problems. I do not advocate the use of laser-printed labels in wet collections, especially now with the toner that is "bonded" at a lower heat than 20 years ago. Andy's recommendation for the thermal printed labels is certainly acceptable as well.

Back when we had different systems, our best results were when the labels were done on daisywheel and 24-pin dot matrix printers with multistrike carbon ribbons.

The labels Andy sent me some time back do well on my window sill; but this is a different polyester material.

In general, polyester labels are rather rigid; they may not be the first choice if they could get into direct contact with fragile specimens (e.g. they could break off antennas of insects or poke into jelly fish when labelling jars). But as said, it is surely worth to do some testing first and they opt for what seems most suited for your purpose.

All the best

The gold standard for wet collections is the thermal transfer printer and spun bound polyester media system that a number of museums have been using for some time now. We have been using it in our ichthyology and herpetology collections for over 15 years and have been extremely happy with them – no fading, yellowing, cracking or any deterioration in a number of different environments – ethanol, isopropanol, formalin, glycerin – pure and with specimen associated oils and contaminants.

I have had an informal test ongoing on my window ledge for about 11 years now with labels in all solutions in direct sunlight and the labels still look as new.

Attached is information about the printer, the pricing from Alpha Systems and an article I wrote for the SPNHC newsletter some time back.

As Dirk mentioned there was some worry a while back about labels not standing up to certain fluids but this was traced back to a batch of incorrect ribbon that was shipped to various users.

Happy to provide further details if you are interested or ship you some sample labels to try.

Andy

Subject: [Nhcoll-l] guidelines for printing labels

Hello,

Can someone please direct me to a resource/guidelines for the best settings for printing labels that will be immersed in alcohol (and occasionally formalin)?

We have been printing using a laser printer (Lexmar MS310dn) on permafiber paper. We have been using this system for years but I have recently noticed that, particularly on small (vial sized) labels, that abrasion is wearing/scratching off some of the ink (mainly from forcept or vial mouth). The label ink doesn’t bleed once immersed but I am still concerned with the long term viability of these labels.

Many thanks,
