I was at MCZ when Fred arrived - a breath of fresh air. He brought to the MCZ (from the Smithsonian) the idea of doing a collections management policy. This was the seed for the departments at MCZ to create their own.
Sorry to hear of his passing.

Subject: [Nhcoll-l] Fred Collier
For those who may have known Fred Collier through SPNHC or work with paleo collections, I want to pass on the sad news of his passing on June 28. Fred was the organizer of the First Annual SPNHC meeting in 1986 at the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution.
Frederick Joseph Collier
June 27, 1932 - June 28, 2017
Frederick Joseph (Fred) Collier passed away on June 28, 2017 just one day after his 85th birthday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help. Fred is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Martha Collier, 7 children including Sean William Collier of Danvers, Massachusetts, Kevin Collier of Virginia Beach, Kate Collier Banks of Atlanta, Georgia, Maureen Collier Funk of Tampa, Florida, Meghan Collier Anderson of Birmingham, Alabama and Mary Collier of Chesapeake, VA and 16 grandchildren.
Fred was born in China on June 27, 1932 to General William A. and Gladys H. Collier and grew up in Arlington, Massachusetts. After serving in the Air Force and graduating from Tufts University with a degree in Geology, Fred and Martha moved to the Washington DC area where Fred joined the staff of the Geological Survey and the Smithsonian Institution and continued his studies in Paleontology at George Washington University. During his 33 career at the Smithsonian, Fred was instrumental in the development of the Museum Collections Management role and continued his research into trilobites. Fred was an enthusiastic teacher who led fossil collecting trips and taught at George Washington University for 20 years. In 1992, Fred retired from the Smithsonian, moved to Beverly and joined the staff of the Harvard University Museum of Comparative Zoology to organize and manage their invertebrate fossil collection. Fred retired from Harvard University in 2007 and retired in Beverly, Mass where he lived until moving to Atlantic Shores in Virginia Beach in 2014.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, July 7, 2017 at 10 am at St. John the Apostle, 1968 Sandbridge Road, Virginia Beach, Virginia.
