I haven't heard of that one. For some animal groups, unique specimens (i.e. holotypes) are not loaned at all. Anyone wanting to study them needs to visit.

We have a request from a large European museum of natural history to borrow a geological specimen of ours that is one-of-a-kind.  One of our Directors thinks we should charge a fee for its use.  Does anyone subscribe to this practice in the Natural History realm?  Apparently it is done in the Fine Arts world with mixed reviews.  And if so, how does one determine the amount?

I am curious to hear others take on this….
