[Nhcoll-l] AAMG response to ULM collections deaccession

A useful response - I look forward to seeing the full AAMG Professional
Practices for Academic Museums when published.

I do think it could benefit from being more explicit about the implications
associated with provenance - such as highlighting the need to ensure that
material on loan or donated with contracted conditions attached is legally
able to be disposed of. It would also be good if it made reference to
health and safety legislation that may be breached if the collection is not
surveyed to ensure chemicals common in collections such as formalin,
arsenic and mercuric chloride are identified and disposed of appropriately.
We may all be aware of these sorts of issues, but many university
administrators probably don't have a clue about them, but they will be
affected if hit with a lawsuit for disposing of some other organisation's
material or dumping toxic waste.
