Collections are constantly looking for new ways to show their relevance and advocate for their existence. We have traditionally used stats on use of physical collections through loans etc. and data through aggregator and web access stats (well, when they are available). We have always had a problem with getting people to feed publication use of collections back to the collections and providing a viable measure of what the total publication count for a collection really means has been difficult. In this regard, something I have set up as an additional measure of collection relevance and advocacy is a Google scholar account for KU ichthyology that includes all publications that directly cite material from the collection or indicate use of the collection for research.
I did this by creating a Google email address for the collection - KUIchthyology at gmail.com - and then accumulating all publications into a Google scholar citation account which can be found here: https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__scholar.google.com_citations-3Fuser-3DFdXNWeMAAAAJ-26hl&d=DwIFAw&c=-dg2m7zWuuDZ0MUcV7Sdqw&r=CLFZJ3fvGSmDp7xK1dNZfh6uGV_h-8NVlo3fXNoRNzI&m=vFSGtLM0cNpoH-UibHjf4aGdJaIApt8NFu_FNkAOY7A&s=_nIVkYcD38Orsf22poNI_AkLWRwZkl4k_MEoAy-pX18&e= .
Obviously accumulating these publications is the time consuming part and is hindered by the fact that specimens or data are very frequently not cited correctly or at all. This is something that needs to be addressed as part of a broader strategy to link data into a natural history data pipeline that involves as few human interactions as possible. As such I employed a number of strategies for accumulating these:
1. Researcher feedback on publications citing our material from a yearly email I send out to all loan and tissue gift recipients asking for such
2. Google scholar searches for various terms:
a. KU ichthyology
b. My name found in acknowledgements
c. Curators names found in acknowledgements
d. Common collectors in the collection
e. Common users of the collection
3. References associated with Genbank sequences referencing specimens from the collection
These can then all be added to the profile through Google scholar to provide an index of collections use which includes an h-index more commonly used by researchers to measure both productivity and citation impact or their body of work (https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__en.wikipedia.org_wiki_H-2Dindex&d=DwIFAw&c=-dg2m7zWuuDZ0MUcV7Sdqw&r=CLFZJ3fvGSmDp7xK1dNZfh6uGV_h-8NVlo3fXNoRNzI&m=vFSGtLM0cNpoH-UibHjf4aGdJaIApt8NFu_FNkAOY7A&s=f1-9PnwTdEZUe2OGXFR3l6wrwb85WwVPNkq6Nq9VP-w&e= ). Our profile includes 574 references with total citation of 20,756 and an h-index of 74 all time and 50 since 2012. As stated in this article:
"Among 36 new inductees in the National Academy of Sciences in biological and biomedical sciences in 2005, the median h-index was 57"
So, our collection index is fairly impressive and a great statistic to be able to use for collections advocacy showing research use of the collection.
