*The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is inviting applications for
the following position:   *



*Position Title:  **Curator 1, Anthropology**
                              Monthly Salary Range: **  $3792-5601 *

*Position Location:** IL State Museum Research & Collections Center, 1011
E. Ash St., Springfield – Sangamon County*

*Work Schedule:   **Monday – Friday 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., 1-hour lunch,
Saturday, Sunday Off    *



*Description of Duties*

Executes highly specialized duties and complex projects that require
special expertise in Midwestern archaeology. Works largely without
supervision, generally at his/her own direction through conferences with
appropriate Museum Director and/or Museum Section Heads, and/or Curator
III’s and II’s.  Works toward established goals in the Museum’s research,
education, collection, and/or exhibition programs in anthropology.  Conducts
original scholarly research on topics associated with Midwestern
archaeology, anthropology, and related themes; and publishes results.
Collects and analyzes archaeological and anthropological data using cutting
edge techniques; creates new knowledge and interpretations of Midwestern
Native American prehistory and history, and related themes. Writes reports
and articles for publication in professional peer-reviewed journals, museum
publications, and popular outlets.  Presents research and programs for
public and scholarly professional audiences. Manages, develops, and
upgrades extensive archaeology/anthropology collections. Participates in
the Museum’s interdisciplinary Landscape History Program.  Oversees the
completion of loan forms, donor forms, and accession & catalog records for
objects in the archaeology/anthropology collection.   Assists Museum
administration in carrying out discipline-based programming related to
Midwestern archaeology & anthropology.  Works with senior staff to generate
external funds from highly competitive funding sources for research,
collections, exhibitions, and programs, including federal grants where
nationally recognized expertise and higher degrees are required to be
competitive.   Performs at a level that reflects national standards and
best practices of an accredited museum, and that brings state, national and
international recognition to the Illinois State Museum. Must be familiar
with all relevant state and federal laws.  Abides by professional museum
ethics and the ethics of specific program areas and disciplines such as
archaeology and anthropology. Participates in state and national
professional organizations. Responsible for working with senior and
subordinate staff in establishing objectives, implementing programs, and
conducting evaluations. Performs other duties as assigned by the Museum
Director or designee. Performs other duties as required or assigned that
are reasonably within the scope of duties. All curators are responsible for
advocating for the Illinois State Museum and its programs.



*Desirable Education, Training and Experience*

Position requires a Ph.D. in anthropology or related discipline, with 3
years of curatorial experience and research experience in a museum,
university, or similar institution.  Candidate should have: (1) educational
background, knowledge, and demonstrated interest in Midwestern archaeology,
anthropology, Native American culture, and other disciplines relevant to
the Museum’s archaeology/anthropology collections and programs; (2) strong
commitment to and experience with interdisciplinary approaches and
research; (3) familiarity with and research experience in Midwestern
archaeology; (4) experience with development and management of
archaeology/anthropology collections and related databases; (5) Three years
previous experience in a museum, university, or comparable setting; (6)
strong publication record (including peer-reviewed journals) and
demonstrated grantsmanship; and (7) previous experience with public
education and exhibition programing.
