Dear HENTF members,

The latest requests in response to new and ongoing events. If you’d rather I sent separate requests for each state, let me know – more but shorter communiques.

Ask #1. Please relay this information to your members and constituents in Texas ASAP:
The Request for Public Assistance (RPA) deadline is now 5:00 pm, Oct. 31, 2017. This is a critical deadline and supersedes any previous deadlines provided by the State. If your arts organization, cultural institution, or government entity misses it, you miss the opportunity to be considered for, and possibly receive, federal disaster assistance. Please do not pre-judge your organization about its eligibility. It’s most important that you file that RPA now. If, for some reason, your organization turns out not to be eligible, it will at least help FEMA know who and where you are so we can determine if other resources can be brought to bear to help you.

Ask #2. Please share the following with your members and constituents in California:
The scenes of devastation wrought by the wildfires challenge our comprehension, and the loss of life gives us all pause. Although the fires have turned neighborhoods to ash, the hope exists that cherished family heirlooms somehow survived the flames. If any have survived, these precious items are often covered with soot and ash, requiring prompt and gentle attention to avoid further damage. The Heritage Emergency National Task Force offers basic guidelines from professional conservators for those who search for, and find, family treasures amid the ruins:

Ask #3: If you learn of any cultural institutions, arts organizations, or government entities damaged by the California wildfires, please let me know. If and when Public Assistance dollars are obligated, HENTF can help them navigate the federal disaster assistance process.

Brief Updates

·        Over the first two weeks in October, two teams of Smithsonian preservation experts have visited six Texas Disaster Recovery Centers to conduct demos on salvaging water-damaged family keepsakes. The teams have been well received by disaster survivors and have garnered interest from local and national media. We’ll share links to the pieces as we learn of them. ·        The Florida phone banking by University of Florida Museum Studies graduate students launched last week. They are diligently calling all the institutions on the grand list to ascertain damage. Follow-up by HENTF and you will help ensure that the institutions get the resources they need to recover.

·        Our lists of institutions in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands are much more robust, thanks to your contributions. Please continue to convey reports of damage to me.

·        We are exploring options for a dashboard, of sorts, to share reports of damage to cultural institutions in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands for “situational awareness.” Stay tuned.
