Project Technician, North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences Non-molluscan Invertebrates


Description: The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences (NCSM) is looking to hire a 2 year, full-time project technician for the Non-Molluscan Invertebrate Unit of the Research and Collections Section. The person in this position will work closely with Non-Molluscan Invertebrate Unit Staff to properly conserve, rehouse, and organize specimens from three major historical collections of marine invertebrates, and to help supervise undergraduate interns and volunteers. This work will include all aspects of curation, including replacement of preservative, rehousing, labeling, and data entry, as well as imaging specimens for education/outreach and the Unit’s online database.



Essential Functions:
- Rehousing specimens into proper containers and preservative
- Cataloging and databasing specimens using Specify
- Updating taxonomic information
- Labeling specimens
- Moving and organizing specimens into new shelving
- Photography/imaging of specimens
- Supervising volunteers and student interns

Qualifications Preferred:
- Bachelor’s Degree in invertebrate zoology/biology or related field
- Curatorial experience in natural history collections
- Experience with relational databases
- Efficient and attention to detail
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- Experience supervising others
- Must be able to lift 20 lbs and work with various chemicals

Salary: $30,000/year plus benefits (not negotiable)
