Subject: HENTF action for Florida, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands

Dear HENTF members,

It’s been a challenging 5 weeks since Hurricane Harvey struck, followed by Irma, and then Maria. I know so many of you have been working tirelessly to provide assistance to your members and constituents. I ask that you [continue to] push information out to your constituents and share the information you gather from them.

We recognize that the top priority continues to be providing life safety and life-sustaining resources to the survivors in the territories. As others address their pressing humanitarian needs, this is our opportunity to work together with our island colleagues to plan for the recovery of the territories’ cultural heritage. Many of us are receiving urgent requests for assistance from the islands, and we should strive for situational awareness of these response and recovery efforts. Resources are too scarce and logistics too challenging to approach assistance in any other way. Concurrently, we need to maintain our engagement with Texas and Florida institutions.

Thanks to the hard work of FAIC’s National Heritage Responders and other HENTF members, 600 cultural institutions in Florida have been identified to date, 95 in Puerto Rico, and 16 in the Virgin Islands. But those lists do not capture the full universe of cultural institutions and arts organizations.

My requests regarding Florida, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands:


1.      Please ask your constituents to convey reports of damage to you and CC me, lori.foley at fema.dhs.gov<mailto:lori.foley at fema.dhs.gov>.



2.      If you’re already aware of impacted cultural institutions, please pass that information along to me by noon (Eastern) next Tuesday, Oct. 3. We’ll compile a situation report, HENTF’s Steering Committee will discuss it, and we’ll share it back with you.



3.      As noted above, we need to flesh out the lists of cultural institutions and arts organizations as best we can. Please share with me your list of constituents and members in FL, PR, and USVI so we can cross check them against our list. Repeating the model employed in Texas, a phone bank staffed by graduate students will call each institution to ascertain damage and ask whether assistance is needed. The calls to Florida will begin next week, and we want to ensure that the phone bankers reach out to as many institutions as possible.



4.      Conversely, please check your lists against ours (attached), and let me know which institutions we’re missing. If you can furnish institutional phone numbers, great. And contact names and numbers would be even greater. For USVI and especially PR, we are missing many phone numbers, and the communication issues make identification and contact difficult. Outreach will require contact names and numbers. I’d love to receive these lists also by noon (Eastern) next Tuesday, Oct. 3, or as soon as you can compile them.
