[Nhcoll-l] Date format

Dear Paul,

To separate the century and the year in that way was not common in the late 19th century and the early 20th century. I have seen it in labels and field notebooks several times. At least made by peoples from Sweden. (If it was typical Swedish I don’t know, but Philadelphia had many immigrants from Sweden!)

Best wishes,

3/viii 25 and 23/v 26 are standard abbreviations for 3rd of August 1925 and 23rd of May 1926 respectively. Is the 19 written in the same hand as the rest? And does your catalog extend back to the beginning of the 19th century? Given how close these dates were to the turn of the century, someone may have later added 18 and 19 in front of dates distinguish them.

With best wishes,
David

Could it be a range of dates? August 19 - September 3, 1925 and May 19 - 23, 1926?

Has anyone come across a label date format in which the date is nestled within the year, thus:

19 3/viii 25
Or
19 23/v 26

I take these to mean August 3, 1925 and May 23, 1926 respectively – correct?
