One traditional method that has been used here is to tie a red ribbon around the neck of the jar. As this doesn’t involve ink or paint, it is very suitable for wet collections.

Subject: [Nhcoll-l] Labels for type specimens in etanol

Please, conservators and curators who have type specimens in your wet collections. How do you label them? A red label inside etanol solution is not a good idea, but types must to be marked in some way. Is it wright to use a regular fluid -white- label and write “type” beside the specimen’s name? Maybe also draw a red square in the outside surface of the glass?
Thanks for your contributions,
Marta
