Hi Jessa,

Interesting to read that you are all using cotton string. We use Barbour linen thread for everything:

Barbour 100% Pure Linen Thread - Preservation Equipment Ltd<https://www.preservationequipment.com/Catalogue/Conservation-Materials/Thread-and-twine/Barbour-100-Pure-Linen-Thread>

We use the 25/3 50g spool. It remains firm after exposure to liquid which makes it easy to work with even when wet. I don’t know whether it is available in the US. We have a couple of local sellers in Australia.

Subject: [Nhcoll-l] Fluid specimen string?

Some people who received this message don't often get email from jwatters at ou.edu<mailto:jwatters at ou.edu>. Learn why this is important<https://aka.ms/LearnAboutSenderIdentification>
Hello all,

I am with a Herpetology fluid collection in Oklaoma. We have been using the same string to tie on our specimen tags for my entire career here (both field tags and catalog tags). This string was bought in bulk in Brazil in the mid 2000s and is finally running low. Our current administration has no contacts in South America nor any easy way to pay someone that could buy it for us. I am looking for an easily sourced alternative that is as similar as possible, and is definitely at least similar thickness, 100% cotton, and white (photo attached of box, label, and string).

Any advice? Getting a tiny sample by mail would even be amazing! (Could pop a couple inches length in normal envelope and ship to my address below for the price of a stamp 😊 ).

Thanks,
Jessa
