The Suma Aquarium in Kobe has what at one time was the largest flat-glass aquarium window in the world. It survived the 1995 Great Hanshin Earthquake despite being about twenty kilometers from the epicenter and despite many buildings around it being wrecked, as I saw in the following days. The fish were fine, but the power was off for weeks so many of them died and got fed to the penguins and sealions (who presumably enjoyed the gourmet feast).
Interesting, then, that a crack in a glass cylinder caused catastrophic failure when a building shaking almost a meter horizontally for several seconds didn’t break a flat sheet.
