Hi Gali,
hope all is right at your end!
John is right, -40°C can cause quite some damage for some materials because of the shrinkage. -25°C for IPM treatment (maybe for a slightly longer time) shoul dbe perfectly enough to kill pests. There have been some recent papers on this topic, a colleague of mine was referring to them recently when we were "talking pests". Need to dig them out; there is on Tome Strang wrote a couple of years back, think it is this here: link<https://www.canada.ca/en/conservation-institute/services/conservation-preservation-publications/canadian-conservation-institute-notes/controlling-insects-low-temperature.html>
In this link of the Canadian Conservation Institute it is recommended not to go deeper than -40°C
The newer article of Tom (2008) is referenced on the museum pest list, and here the recommendation also is probably not going further down than -30°C: link<https://museumpests.net/solutions-low-temperature-treatment/>
Hope this helps
Dirk

Dear All,
I'd like to ask for opinions regarding the choice of a freezer for our herbarium. The herbarium already has a -40C freezer for pest control purposes, but the combination of large quantities of incoming material for freezing with questions regarding additional possible uses for the freezer raised the question whether a new, additional freezer should be a -40C freezer or a -80C freezer.
Generally speaking, pest control does not usually require temperatures as low as -80C, but DNA preservation (samples, tissues from non-herbal collections) does. Would you consider keeping a -80C freezer to serve both purposes as need arises? I'm curious to hear whether other herbaria use -80C freezers or choose higher temperatures. There is of course the question of cost vs actual requirements, and the main requirement right now is for pest control prior to entry into the herbarium.
A penny for your thoughts,
Gali
