Hi Katrina,
Soaking the vials in a solution of glass cleaner (we use Alconox, but anything that contains trisodium phosphate will work) will detach most such residues from the glass within a few days.

Subject: [Nhcoll-l] Residue from rubber stoppers on Collembola
External.
Hi all,
The answer for this may have already circulated around and I apologize ahead of time if it has, but does anyone have any suggestions on how to remove the buildup that accumulates sometimes from specimens stored in ethanol with rubber stoppers? We just received a loan back of Collembola that were apparently unusable because when they were loaned a decade or so ago, they were in vials with rubber stoppers that reacted with the ethanol and left deposits onto the specimens. I’m going to move them out of the vials into archival screw-top vials, but if there is a way to salvage them I would appreciate any tips.
Thank you all for your insight,
Katrina Menard
