[Nhcoll-l] Zoological Specimen Drawers

We have cabinets from a number of manufacturers, but we have many Lane cabinets and as you can imagine, the need for a large number of drawers. We have had a lot of success purchasing from Delta Designs who have fabricated both drawers to fit in the Lane cabinets and double door cabinets that will accommodate the “Lane-size” drawers.

Hi everyone,

I am a curator of biology at a small-ish museum in California, and I am running into an issue as I try to figure out where to buy new metal drawers for my zoological specimen cabinets. Most of our drawers are made of wood, and we have a very large bird egg collection that we need to move into metal drawers to better conserve them. This is going to involve replacing a lot of drawers, but right now we can only afford to replace some of them. I know of three major museum cabinet manufacturers: Lane Scientific, Delta Designs, and Steel Fixture. We have mostly Lane cabinets that are probably between 50-70 years old, and a handful of Steel Fixture cabinets that I think we purchased in the late 90’s or early 2000’s. I am now faced with the conundrum of purchasing new drawers for both cabinets. The drawers we currently have do fit in both cabinets, so they do seem to be a standard size.

Based on quotes I have received, Steel Fixture drawers are the least expensive, but I wanted to reach out to the community to see if anyone had some recommendations on who they think is best.
