*Old Croone Day, 04 June 2024*
“When I die don’t cry for me,
Don’t bury me at all,
Just put my living, laughing, loving bones
In a jar of alcohol, hundred proof alcohol”
―*Lightning Bar Blues* as sung by Hoyt Axton (1971)
Once again, it is Old Croone Day, the occasion on which we join together in
acknowledgement of an unquenchable spirit of curiosity and experimentation
by hoisting a glass of our favorite beverage to toast the preservation of
community and friendship, while basking in the pleasure of finding things
out.
Old Croone Day is a celebration of the first written record of the
preservation of scientific specimens in alcohol, which took place on 04
June in 1662. On that auspicious day, the esteemed physician, anatomist,
and professor of rhetoric William Croone (1633-1684) showed fellow members
of the *Royal Society of London for the Improving of Natural Knowledge*
specimens of “two embryos of puppy-dogs, which he had kept eight days, and
were put in spirit in a glass-vial sealed hermetically.”
In addition, to celebrate this year’s Old Croone Day I am pleased to
announce that I am currently working on a new, revised edition of *Fluid
Preservation: A Comprehensive Reference*, and this I will greatly
appreciate any and all suggestions and comments on the first edition that
will improve the second.
Here’s to you, Dr. William Croone!
