[Nhcoll-l] Stabilizing cannel coal

Hi Gretchen,
We have used marine epoxy in the past in very specific circumstances,
but I don't personally recall hearing of anyone here using it on cannel
coal. But I guess I can't swear it's never been done....
We /have/ used it on large dinosaur bones, hundreds of pounds in weight,
where B-72, though reversible, is not competent. And true chemical
reversibility is probably unlikely when one adds any compound to a
fossil. Mechanical reversibility is possible even with epoxy through
mechanical preparation. One can successfully remove rock matrices in
large specimens which are harder than epoxy.
BTW, the marine epoxy we've used is not the one you cite. I'd be happy
to give the url of the product we've used on large bones to anyone
interested. But for thin cannel coal specimens, I agree, epoxy is not
appropriate. B-72 with a reinforcing fiber of some kind would be
preferable.
Best,
Bill
