Some syringes comes with a little bit of brass wire (in the 1950s or before) down the needle part, larger syringes (veterinary or mortician) syringes have a thicker wire down a suitably wider needle and often have a little steel cap on the end that makes it easier to take out and put back once the needle has been used and cleaned/sterilised.
So, if you leave this wire insert inside the needle and insert the needle-with-wire into the specimen, prior to attaching the body of the syringe, not only will this prevent the needle from picking up tissue as it goes into it, but you can more easily manipulate the needle so that the tip ends up in the correct area for injecting. You obviously remove the wire before attaching the (filled) syringe to the needle.
