Dear Becky,

We have a CDAS system that can differentiate between formaldehyde and ethanol in our wet storerooms and one lab where a lot of wet preparation happens through a network of sensors. The system is linked to our Security control room for 24/7 alarms and to some key collections management staff's laptops (to monitor while on site). As well as sonic alarms we also have lights above the storeroom doors (red/green) to tell us it's safe to enter.

Our system was provided by a company called A1-CBISS which has been taken over by Envea UK Ltd. I can provide a contact if it would be of interest to you to know more as the website doesn't show anything.

We've had these sensors for our 29 ethanol-preserved collection rooms for 28 years and they work great, with wired connection to our Security system.
Of course, the models will now be different (http://www.qelsafety.com/products/sensors/); worth checking.

Hi Becky,

there are a couple of industry grade detectors for alcohol fumes that could create combustible atmospheres and send of an alarm. Usually, these integrated/linked of the climate control systems, which then, for example, could increase the air exchange rates in the respective storage area (search for "alcohol fixed gas detection systems").
