Here is the course for you! A written plan formalizes the IPM strategy and keeps management abreast of your status. It organizes your ideas and lays the groundwork for the needs of the collection and the building(s). It provides the direction in which you want to take the program, including grant funding and accreditation. Join Retired Carnegie Museum of Natural History Conservator Gretchen Anderson for this four week online course in which participants will learn how to apply IPM principles to their specific situation and institution. A draft plan and specific implementation strategies will be developed and discussed. Even though our institutions have different challenges the exchange of ideas presents the opportunity for us to help each other brainstorm solutions that will work for our situation. Of particular note is the session - Reconsidering the division between Natural and Cultural Heritage: The Role of Natural History collections in reactivating intangible knowledge Cheers, Mike [cid:37991e75-2279-40c6-addf-87ffda308610] At the 27th ICOM General Conference in Dubai this year UMAC is collaborating with three other international committees to produce a diverse and relevant program of presentations. We are collaborating with ICOM NATHIST (Natural History), ICOM CIMUSET (Science and Technology) and CIPEG (Egyptology). Below is a description of each collaborative session plus a description of our own International Committee's Day UMAC session. This information will go live on the ICOM Dubai website shortly with a call for papers. We provide this information now so you can plan and prepare to make a submission for one (or more) of these sessions. [cid:75b8fbb5-431a-4ab4-9162-810cbd45c5ba] Reconsidering the division between Natural and Cultural Heritage: The Role of Natural History collections in reactivating intangible knowledge Session A - November 12 afternoon Reconnecting museum collections of cultural heritage - the belongings of people - with their origins and stories has contributed to the enrichment of identity and to intangible knowledge-building by connecting the past with the present, moving beyond safeguarding, to reactivating areas of intangible knowledge. Natural History museums and collections are becoming public places where environmental issues and their anthropogenic origins are addressed. This has led to new approaches to the interactions between people and nature, with a desire to showcase the close connections between cultural and natural heritage in articulating issues which now affect modern societies across the world, such as climate change, increased pollution, migration and habitat loss. We believe collections of cultural and natural heritage need to be more integrated in current analyses. This work is now urgent, as it is directly impacted by current wars and conflicts as well as transformations of habitat, which have altered material and immaterial cultural heritage. This session welcomes case studies and reflections on the interdisciplinary potential of such work. [cid:1a8cea58-e89e-441b-b87b-5c27b58e5479] Collecting the Digital: Rethinking Materiality in Science and University Museums Session B November 12 evening Digital technologies present a unique challenge for science and university museums. Unlike traditional scientific instruments or artifacts, digital innovations-such as artificial intelligence, algorithms, and data-driven research tools-often lack a physical presence that corresponds to their profound societal impact. This session explores how museums can collect, document, and interpret digital and contemporary scientific heritage in ways that preserve both their material and conceptual significance. Bringing together perspectives from universities and museum professionals, this session will examine key questions: How do we collect and exhibit AI and other digital technologies? When is the physical object necessary, and when can alternative collecting strategies be employed? How do decisions about what to collect shape future research and public engagement? Through a keynote presentation, case studies, and discussion, this session will highlight innovative approaches to collecting scientific heritage from university labs and beyond. Rather than providing definitive answers, it will raise critical questions about the evolving role of collections in the digital age, balancing materiality, research, and dissemination. [cid:fce830bf-2263-49ad-a598-f8aeb8cf6fb7] Ancient civilisations and the contemporary academy Session C November 13 afternoon We will investigate the changing understanding of the materiality of ancient civilisations, particularly ancient Egypt, through the contemporary academy and other forms of cultural production and consumption. By 'contemporary academy' we understand a modern organisation that does research, either a museum or a university. We want to discuss how new technologies are transforming the generation and transmission of knowledge and how a new wave of emerging scholarship requires a sound contemporary and ethical framework for both knowledge generation and dissemination. [cid:5d872fbb-f52a-4cac-a3d5-ed3caa85fe92] Rapid Change in Higher Education: The Strategic Value of Museums and Collections November 15 ICs Day In this session we investigate the future of material collections and museums in higher education. The rapid pace of change in higher education pedagogies, research methodologies and public engagement modalities in recent years has produced many challenges and opportunities for university museums. Reconfiguration and rethinking the very nature of higher education raises some fundamental questions on the role of museums and material collections in the future academy, To remain relevant, university museums must embrace change through digital technologies, foster interdisciplinary collaborations, and actively engage with diverse communities and epistemologies. By doing so, we continue to offer higher education an identifiable value proposition and continue contribute meaningfully to society. This session, marking the first time UMAC has met in the UAE, will explore the future of university museums and collections. It was on 04 June 1662 that Dr. William Croone demonstrated ?two embryos of puppy-dogs, which he had kept eight days, and were put in spirit in a glass-vial sealed hermetically? before the Royal Society of London. Croone (1633-1684) graduated from from Emmanuel College (Cambridge) in 1650, was appointed Professor of Rhetoric at Gresham College in London in 1659, and joined a group interested in science experiments which led to him being a founding member of the Royal Society of London in 1662. After Croone was certified as an anatomy lecturer by the Barber-Surgeons' Company, and elected a Fellow in the College of Physicians in 1675. Croone conducted research on physiology, the circulation of blood, respiration, the density of air, and the freezing of water, but it was his interest in embryology that led him to accidentally discover fluid preservation. In this same spirit of scientific curiosity and inquiry, I invite you to celebrate 04 June this year (and every year) by raising a glass of your favorite beverage to toast the preservation of friendships and reflect on how many important developments in science have come about when someone was trying to solve some other problem. This national initiative, organized by the American Institute of Biological Sciences (AIBS), is an opportunity for biologists across the country to meet with their federal or state elected officials to showcase the people, facilities, and equipment that are required to support and conduct scientific research. This initiative helps to put a face on science and to remind lawmakers that science is happening in their district and state. The Biological Sciences Congressional District Visits event enables scientists, graduate students, representatives of research facilities, and people affiliated with scientific collections to meet with their federal or state elected officials without traveling to Washington, DC. *Participating scientists can either meet with their elected officials at the local district office or may invite them to visit their research facility.* AIBS will schedule participants' meetings with lawmakers and will prepare participants through online training and one-on-one support. Meetings will take place mid-July through October, depending on the participant's schedule and their lawmaker's availability. The event is made possible by AIBS, with the support of event sponsors: American Society of Primatologists, Botanical Society of America, Florida International University Institute of Environment, Helminthological Society of Washington, Natural Science Collections Alliance, Organization of Biological Field Stations, Paleontological Society, Society for Preservation of Natural History Collections, and Society for the Study of Evolution. *Registration for participation is free, but required, and closes on July 14, 2025. To learn more and register, visit io.aibs.org/cdv <http://io.aibs.org/cdv>.* Please share this announcement with interested colleagues and graduate students. ___________________ Jyotsna Pandey, Ph.D. Director of Community Programs American Institute of Biological Sciences (AIBS) ........................................ *Subscribe <https://www.congressweb.com/signup/?id=79D5D55D-5056-8653-C328479920C1C14F> to the bi-weekly AIBS Public Policy Report to s**tay current on the latest science policy news. * *Subscribe <https://pages.rasa.io/articles/11a87efe-992a-4da4-94b2-b38e616fee74> to the AIBS newsletter & receive personalized biology news, including events & announcements from our member societies.* -- This message is confidential and should only be read by its intended recipients.? For more information visit our website: https://www.museumstudy.com/integrated-pest-management-plan Policies for Managing Collections 4 week online course begins June 30 on MuseumStudy.com Museums today are faced with many new and unexpected challenges, including climate change, developing sustainable practices in collection care, preservation of digital information, decolonization and repatriation, changing environmental parameters for collection storage, and strategies for coping with ever-larger collections with shrinking budgets. In his May 2024 webinar, John E. Simmons discussed how good collection management policies can help museums address these issues and other topics in the new, revised third edition of Things Great and Small: Collection Management Policies. Join instructor John Simmons for the 4 week long course Policies for Managing Collections. In this course we will critically examine the purposes and functions of collections management policies, including how collections are defined, acquired, managed, used, maintained, and deaccessioned. Learn how to write collections management policies for your own institution and how to evaluate the effectiveness of your policies. Participants can purchase the Third Edition of the book at a discount. For more information visit our website: https://www.museumstudy.com/policies-for-managing-collections Creating Virtual Learning Opportunities in Museums course begins June 30 on MuseumStudy.com Join Hillary Hanel Rose for this virtual professional development course born out of the challenges we all encountered to deliver virtual learning experiences when we had to close to the public. Creating Virtual Learning Opportunities in Museums will cover creating both synchronous and asynchronous programs, connecting with teachers, and some technical skills to ensure that you can support teachers and students virtually as they learn from you and your museum. Participants will create at least 3 different virtual museum education programs and learn to use technology tools and build skills to help them develop additional virtual learning opportunities. If you missed the webinar Hillary gave Don't Reinvent the Wheel: Using SAMR to Create Virtual Programs Inspired by your In-Person Programs you can watch it on our YouTube Channel. The link is on the course page. Hillary goes into greater depth about the SAMR Model (Substitution, Augmentation, Modification, Redefinition) in week one of the course. This is a full time, exempt position. Responsible for the continued development, identification and research use of these collections, being predominantly marine and terrestrial mollusks, of over two million specimens, with the second largest holdings in Recent marine Bryozoa. We seek an energetic individual who will promote the accessibility of these collections through ongoing digitization efforts and through the Museum's nature education programs, exhibits and science outreach. Located in the coastal town of Santa Barbara, renowned for its Mediterranean climate, the Museum was founded over 100 years ago. It has a long established, strong tradition in collection-based research with many of its collections being ranked both nationally and internationally. Our largest IZ holdings are mollusks from the eastern and tropical Indo-Pacific and western North America with historical specimens dating to the 1850s. This resource has been built based on the quality of specimen data and today contains many hidden assets that need to be made more accessible. During the past 50 years it has grown by actively seeking personal collections from both amateur and professional malacologists, who have specialized in field work and have been meticulous in their record keeping. The Bryozoa collection includes the former holdings of the USC Allan Hancock Foundation, that formed the basis of Raymond Osburn's monographs [1950-1953] on Eastern Pacific species, as well as the research collections of John and Dorothy Soule, compiled throughout the Indo-Pacific [1965-1997]. Minimum requirements include a Ph.D. in invertebrate zoology, or equivalent training; multi-year expertise with museum collections and curational techniques. Familiarity with SPECIFY software and SEM techniques, is most highly desirable, as is a record of original collection-based research that demonstrates taxonomic experience. Candidate should be a good communicator and enthusiastic interpreter of invertebrate zoology, even outside of their specific expertise, to the public. Experience with grant writing for collection-based research, management and field work is desirable. Online submissions to include (1) letter of interest; (2) current CV with list of publications, and up to three PDFs; (3) names of three references. Please note that Applicants must be authorized to work for any employer in the U.S. We are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa at this time. This is a very narrow market, and within Europe companies like Forstner, Zambelli, or Bruynzeel have a focus on compactors, i.e. from a principle design idea viewpoint this is an open shelf that is converted into a stand-alone cabinet. Companies like Lista, Polestore or other are specialised on cabinets, but their main clients is industry and the principle design idea behind is tool/industry cabinetry. Manufacturers for high quality stand alone metal natural history cabinets that agree with our conservation requirements are mostly producing in the Anglo-American market, such as Space Saver, Delta Design, or Steel Fixtures. There are some in the UK, and UK colleagues may jump in with some names. We were looking into this but run into post-Brexit customs/tax/transportation issues, which surely are resolved and will ease after the recent agreement of the UK government with the EU. It might be worth mentioning though that Bruynzeel recently took over Delta Design, which might open opportunities to reduce shipping and freight costs, which need to be considered. There are some manufactures for wooden cabinets in Eastern Europe, but wood typically off-gases VOCs (especially laminated plywood or particle board). Another question is if you have standardised drawers in your collection, or if you need bespoken cabinets/sizes, and if so, how high your ordering volume would be. We recently ordered few cabinets from Delta (however Ornithology cabinets), but now have a second order with them because the higher quality (and price) for the stand alone cabinets will pay off in the long run. We have been ordering open cabinets for entomology from a Polish vendor (Paradox) for an interim storage / rehousing project, but probably will look into more sustainable solutions for future storage. Hope this helps Dirk Am 12.06.2025 um 10:38 schrieb Vanessa Pitusi: Dear all, Our entomology collection is in need of more storage cabinets and cases. They produce an excellent metal cabinet; their drawers are also excellent and pest proof. They have been attending the Entomological Collections Network meetings as vendors the past several years. Because they are based in Europe, they are probably more cost-effective for collections on that side of the pond. Metal cabinets are much better and more archival than wood for most situations. Thanks to everyone who participated! Some of you donated artwork, others bid (and won!), local organizers helped make the dream a reality, and others helped make sure all the events ran smoothly such as the Unconference and Artist's Corner. We, Chandra Earl and I, wrote a manual to share why we did this, how we did it (and you can too), and what were the results (so far) from our first effort. We hope you find it useful in your own local efforts and for future SPNHC meetings. If you weren't there, we hope you'll give our manual a look-see to learn about what we did and for how it might help your local collections relevance and expertise advocacy. (San Deigo to San Francisco) and I am working on a very tight budget. Does anyone have any cheap methods or company recommendations for shipping items like this? I have only ever shipped small specimens before so this is new territory for me, and I don't really have any idea on what to look for so any tips, tricks or things to look out for would be appreciated. I recommend you contact Dan Burke (dburke at palmermoving.com) from Palmer Moving. They are based out of the Detroit area, but they are an agent of Atlas Van Lines. Dan organized our collections (15+ million specimens) move across town, as well the move of a large herpetology collection (50,000+ specimens) from Oregon State to Michigan. If he cannot coordinate directly, he can work with a local agent that can. I hope that helps! Take care, Cody Cody W. Another option that you might consider is renting a UHaul and driving them to SF from San Diego yourself. That would probably be cheaper but you would need people to help with the move. Thank you to Liath Appleton for assistance in getting this finalized. The Wiki can be accessed from the main spnhc.org home page, or directly here: [ https://spnhc.org/wiki-home-page/ ]( https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__spnhc.org_wiki-2Dhome-2Dpage_&d=DwMFAg&c=WO-RGvefibhHBZq3fL85hQ&r=EYdhJ0HrhAMcA2aVQ-I4N7lml00zxsXPbHYeP7843No&m=_d9dN2ur4VlfpbTwOPayzy0ODrUkHv7KEkt3_VHeW_N1Yj4dn20CynJeR6-IXd_J&s=iCt5BrmX8esC1O1GJ140zW8X5vWaOZvMC9aE1DXAUYI&e= ) Now, wiki content can now be queried alongside related website topics without navigating to a separate website. There is also a webform to facilitate the submission of new content for the wiki (no web editing knowledge required!). If you have ideas for a new page, or content to add to an existing page, please try it out. We are still in the process of implementing updates and organization under this new scheme, so if you have suggestions or find mistakes/errors please email [ bpchairs at spnhc.org ]( mailto:bpchairs at spnhc.org ). Thank you all for your patience while the wiki was down and during the transition to this new location.
