Dear Vanessa,

it depends a bit what exactly you are looking for. This is a very narrow market, and within Europe companies like Forstner, Zambelli, or Bruynzeel have a focus on compactors, i.e. from a principle design idea viewpoint this is an open shelf that is converted into a stand-alone cabinet. Companies like Lista, Polestore or other are specialised on cabinets, but their main clients is industry and the principle design idea behind is tool/industry cabinetry.

Manufacturers for high quality stand alone metal natural history cabinets that agree with our conservation requirements are mostly producing in the Anglo-American market, such as Space Saver, Delta Design, or Steel Fixtures. There are some in the UK, and UK colleagues may jump in with some names. We were looking into this but run into post-Brexit customs/tax/transportation issues, which surely are resolved and will ease after the recent agreement of the UK government with the EU. It might be worth mentioning though that Bruynzeel recently took over Delta Design, which might open opportunities to reduce shipping and freight costs, which need to be considered.

There are some manufactures for wooden cabinets in Eastern Europe, but wood typically off-gases VOCs (especially laminated plywood or particle board).

Another question is if you have standardised drawers in your collection, or if you need bespoken cabinets/sizes, and if so, how high your ordering volume would be.

We recently ordered few cabinets from Delta (however Ornithology cabinets), but now have a second order with them because the higher quality (and price) for the stand alone cabinets will pay off in the long run. We have been ordering open cabinets for entomology from a Polish vendor (Paradox) for an interim storage / rehousing project, but probably will look into more sustainable solutions for future storage.

Hope this helps
Dirk

Dear all,

Our entomology collection is in need of more storage cabinets and cases.

We have a potential supplier but just wanted to see what other companies museums in Europe might be ordering from.

Kind regards,

Vanessa
