We keep our older type microscope slides on flat aluminum trays in small cabinets made by Thomas Scientific. The two problems are that the cabinets are made of oak, which is corrosive, and are extremely expensive.
Nevertheless, it is better to store slides horizontally than vertically, as their cover glasses can detach with time and vibration.

External.
Hi Nate and all,

I guess the question is how many slides we are talking. In Hamburg, we have about 300,000 slides dwelling in all sorts of boxes and (wooden) cabinets, which sit on wooden trays.

The disadvantage is that all these materials potentially off-gas VOC's, which can effect the mounting media.

But it might be worth looking into Birger Neuhaus' microslide bible: section 3.2.1 covers environmental factors, 3.2.2 cabinets, and 3.2.3 trays.https://www.mapress.com/zt/article/view/zootaxa.4322.1.1/12414

The 173 pages basically cover EVERYTHING you want to know about storing slides, including conservation treatment.

Birger doesn't recommend storing microslides in boxes. Better would be metal trays and cabinets. Delta Design has developed, some nice solutions, also for storing less than 500,00 slides ....

https://www.deltadesignsltd.com/our-products/microslide-storage-2/

We will move all our slides into one of these cabinets.

Hope this helps,

with all best wishes
Dirk

To clarify, since a few people have sent me messages already, I’m looking for boxes for storing glass slides with histological sections mounted on them, not 35 mm film positives 😊.
