The SPNHC - Networking and Career Development Committee is having its next
meeting, *Wednesday, April 8th from 2-3pm EST* (Time Zone Converter Website

Benjamin Hess is the Museum Registrar Senior for the University of Michigan
(U-M) Herbarium and Museum of Zoology (UMMZ), serving this role since 2018.
The museums are part of the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology
(EEB) within the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA). Ben
also serves as the EEB Museums Safety Representative at the Research
Museums Center (RMC). As a Registrar, Ben approves the documentation for
all incoming specimens associated with the Herbarium and UMMZ. Working with
respective researchers, he ensures the legal collection, transport, export,
and import of material coming to the U-M. As a Safety Representative, he
works with museum personnel working at the RMC to improve safety standards
within lab and collection spaces. Ben educates others within EEB and LSA on
best practices to bring material to the U-M through annual webinars or
individual consulting. He serves as a resource for plant and animal
material regulations, and works with state, federal, and international
entities to improve this knowledge base. In addition to U-M service, Ben is
a member of the Society for the Preservation of Natural History Collections
and part of the Legislation and Regulations Committee, where they aim to
provide guidance to those around the world to ensure compliance with global
regulations.
