The last sentence of John's message is in fact the exact reason why
specimens preservation in formaldehyde of etnanol (indeed any chemical with
ethyl or -ol) will distort tissue isotopic signals. If wet specimens are to
be used for stable isotope analyses, the better option is usually to
preserve in a reasonably weak solution of the common table salt (sodium
chloride). But even this should work well only if the specimens was
recently acquired in the field (recently dead) - a time frame of days -
because after several weeks, even the salt solution will have fixed and
considerably altered the tissue, and hence the isotopic test signals will
no longer be completely defensible.
