We invite you to take part in an upcoming webinar focused on practical, experience-driven strategies for keeping digitization efforts strong and sustainable. This is an opportunity to engage directly with leaders across institutions, learn from real-world examples, and contribute to a broader discussion about how we can collectively support and sustain digitization programs beyond individual grants and funding cycles. See below for the registration link.
February 24, 2026: Sustaining Digitization: A Community Perspective (2:00-4:00pm ET)
Speakers:
Libby Ellwood (Florida Museum of Natural History, University of Florida, iDigBio)
Katja Seltmann (University of California - Santa Barbara, Cheadle Center)
Regina Wetzer (National History Museum of LA County)
Jason Best (Botanical Research Institute of Texas)
Abstract: This webinar highlights practical strategies from leaders in the digitization community who are addressing common challenges in creating and sustaining digitization programs. Speakers will share approaches to diversifying funding beyond federal sources, stretching limited budgets, developing cost-effective workflows, and staffing efforts with work-study students, volunteers, and community scientists. Strategies for outreach, inreach, and sustaining activities beyond grant periods will also be discussed. Drawing on experience at a large natural history museum, within an R1 university, and at botanical research institute, the session will explore leveraging work-study programs, volunteers, collection rescue initiatives, state funding opportunities, and cross-departmental coordination to support collection needs. It will also address engaging donors around specific digitization priorities, sharing clear progress updates, and prioritizing active research use to ensure long-term sustainability. A Q&A will follow.
