Abstract:
The Yale Peabody Museum’s digitization infrastructure is sustained, in part, by fostering intentional collaboration among the GLAM (galleries, libraries, archives, and museums) collections at Yale University. The university’s IT organization has “Cultural Heritage IT” as one of its organizational pillars to support not only digitization, but the entire digital object lifecycle that includes digitization, publication as linked open data, digital asset management, and digital preservation. This collaboration emphasizes shared governance and impactful partnerships to address the varied and diverse needs of all the collection unit partners.
In addition, the Yale Peabody Museum is working to develop novel approaches to distribute digitized collections information via a broad range of data portals that leverage standards-based approaches to sharing digitized data. As part of this work, the Peabody is pioneering the use of innovative technologies for digitization which include georeferencing and imaging workflows. Geospatial information for collections objects and collecting events are being re-addressed for continuous data improvement and multi-view imagery is being captured for metadata extraction and 3D modeling of specimens. In short, digitization and the metamorphosis of digital data at the YPM are critical functions that reflect the natural history and cultural heritage communities’ priorities as integral components of a modern museum’s critical function.
