[Nhcoll-l] Hi, I am the Collections Curator at Haslemere Museum in the UK I’m hoping to get your advice regarding the use of eucalyptus/menthol oil in pipework as a method for detecting leaks, and whether this would be safe in a mixed museum collection environment such as ours. We suspect there may be a leak somewhere in our pipework, and our heating engineer has proposed using eucalyptus oil as a leak‑detection fluid. Before responding to the engineers, I wanted to see if anyone had any advice as to whether eucalyptus oil would be appropriate—or safe—around museum objects. From what I’ve been able to find, the general guidance is that products like Sauna Milk (Eucalyptus/Menthol) are not suitable for use in museum collection areas. These substances are designed as scented sauna essences rather than leak‑detection agents, and they can introduce unnecessary chemical and humidity risks to sensitive materials.
