Hi Dave,

chiming in to what others and you in part already said, it depends on the purpose - and eventually on the permit conditions that might cover specific usages or specifically exclude any commercial/applied use as can be the case in specimens regulated under Nagoya permits.

We once had a request for lamprey tissues from a specific location which were used by an commercial biomonitoring company to tailor target primers for eDNA monitoring for these lampreys. We requested the sequence information for these specific samples, which added to already existing molecular data for specimens from the same lot. Specimens in this lot were used in different other projects as COI barcoding references. By using the same specimens / specimens from the same lot/location, we added value to these specimens as reference organisms for different monitoring approaches - and to our collection as reference collection for biomonitoring (the source of the tissues ad to be acknowledged).

Our loan terms prohibit commercial use of tissues and sequence data derived therefrom. We receive requests from the biotechnology sector that are not directly commercial but that may produce profitable methodologies or technologies for use in industry. For example, projects aimed at species conservation and habitat restoration, goals that align broadly with our museum’s mission.



Do you grant requests of this nature? If so, do you alter the terms of your institution’s typical loan agreements to do so, and in what ways?
