Good afternoon everyone,
Hope you're looking forward to the next listserv discussion on Personal Digital Archives with expert guest Cathy Marshall of Microsoft in the week of Apr. 27-May1st.
Cathy's thoughts on readings are as follows:
"The long term fate..." is a two part article, and is quite long (the reason it's two parts is that it exceeded DLib's length limit; it was actually written as a single paper):
Marshall, C.C. Rethinking Personal Digital Archiving, Part 1: Four Challenges from the Field. DLib Magazine, 14, 3/4 (March/April 2008). <doi:10.1045/march2008-marshall-pt1>.
Marshall, C.C. Rethinking Personal Digital Archiving, Part 2: Implications for Services, Applications, and Institutions. DLib Magazine, 14, 3/4 (March/April 2008). <doi:10.1045/march2008-marshall-pt2>.
But it should be pretty easy reading, so if you wanted to pair it with something different, there's also a study I did of scholarly personal archiving (with an eye toward the relationship between the scholar and institutional archiving). That's:
Marshall, C.C. From Writing and Analysis to the Repository: Taking the Scholars' Perspective on Scholarly Archiving. Proceedings of JCDL'08, June 16-20, 2008, Pittsburgh, PA, USA. pp. 251-260.

The two-part "rethinking" article is available from her website and linkable through the SISPA wiki bilbiography as well. You'll see from her work that she has analized how people react to creation and keeping of their records in digital environments. She has an interesting take on the challenges in this realm.
Happy reading and I look forward to the discussion,
Catherine
