Dear SISPA colleagues: you may have read the exciting news about the  
discovery and digital publication of Charles Darwin's personal, handwritten  
marginalia in some of the books in his personal library, for example including  
this amusing comment:  
 


In "Charles Lyell’s “Principles of Geology,” he scribbled on the last 
page,  “if this were true[,] adios theory.”"

If you go to the NCH link and click on the hyperlinked first sentence  of 
the story, it will lead you to a commentary on the collection. That contains  
interpretive metadata used by the international consortium of  
organizations involved in Cambridge University's online publishing of the  marginalia 
that provides terminology for different kinds of markings in the  books for: 
annotation, score, crossed, etc. Whether these are unique  to this project or 
part of a broader standard, I don't know. I'm not aware of  any standards 
for marginalia -- perhaps someone in the group may be, which would  be nice 
to know -- but it is an aspect of personal recordkeeping that may arise  with 
many personal collections.
