Hello Everyone,

Sorry for the delay in getting this started, I have been awaiting
permission to distribute a couple of the articles on arrangement that
were selected. Attached are the Hurley and Powell articles in pdf format
from Archives & Manuscripts, as well as the Arrangement of Archival
Units article/section by Michael Swift from the 1972 PAC summer course
material (be aware that it does start part-way through as the first
section was on government records). Here are the links to the other
readings:
NSARM's Rules for Archival Arrangement:
http://gov.ns.ca/nsarm/about/policies/raa.pdf
NSARM's Policy on Archival Arrangement:
http://www.gov.ns.ca/nsarm/about/policies/arrangement.pdf
Sarah Kim's dissertation proposal "Personal Digital Archives:
Preservation of Documents, Preservation of Self":
http://srhkim.com/files/PhD-proposal-final-sarahkim-dissemination.pdf

Some of the articles are relatively old, but I like to think of them as
classics. The idea is to read them and think about whether or not they
hold up intellectually or practically in the current landscape. There
are also some practical "rules" regarding arrangement that have been
codified by NSARM in their policies and procedures which I think pose
some interesting questions. And last but not least, there is a
contemporary dissertation proposal about personal digital archives,
which I am hoping we can consider in terms of the historic thinking on
arrangement.

I am aiming for the discussion to begin on January 30th and continue for
the week. If the readings strike a cord with any actual arrangement
decisions or problems you have had with particular fonds, please take
note and bring these real-life examples into the discussion. And of
course, it goes without saying, that all the articles are for personal
and private use and not for distribution.

Happy reading,
Heather
