What are your experiences with actively pursuing acquisitions?  Cases where you identify a potential fonds for acquisition, and write a letter or make a cold call to the donor to express interest?  What percentage of fonds begin this way, vs. contact initiated by the donor?

My experience over 16 years is a relatively low success rate, at least in the short term.  With some successes in the long term, i.e. 5 to 10 years.  I'm curious if my experiences are typical or atypical?
