My ALA scribbles say that we can send messages about typos or other
things we found in the FAST manual to the list or just to Ed. I'll send
these here. If I mentioned any of these things during our meeting,
sorry to be repetitious. Page references are to the January 12, 2007
version (part of running caption: Version 9).
First level geo names (p. 13)
I think we talked about perpetuating the privilege for U.S., Canada,
U.K. and Australia. I continue to think this is unfortunate and will
not help communication of metadata across national lines or across
metadata communities.
Personal name and dynasty examples (p. 17-18)
The personal name examples have slipped down a bit to fall after the
caption about families and groups of persons. The generic examples of
group names include "[Surname], Dynasty of, [dates]" and then the
example has "Ptolemaic dynasty, 305-30 B.C." Either the generic list or
the example list needs to be revised or expanded.
Corporate names (p. 18)
The Cappella Sistina example, for me, opens the whole issue of
corporate body vs building. I really don't think anyone would want to
burden the manual with the controversy but it might be nice to say
something along the lines of:
Some corporate bodies share their name with the building(s) in which
they are housed. Buildings should be established following the
guidelines for corporate names with a preference for including place
qualifier.
Goodwin example (p. 28)
It seems to me that this example should have gotten the FAST heading
for the American Civil War.
LCSH period subdivs (p. 30)
"extracting the dates results in the lost [i.e., loss] of significant
information"
